Current Work
As the Cinematographer and one of the Producers on The Century Smile, Rich Bella played a key role in shaping the documentary’s visual language, emotional tone, and overall storytelling direction. His work focused on capturing the humanity, legacy, and enduring passion of Dr. Sam—one of the world’s oldest practicing dentists—through cinematic imagery, naturalistic lighting, intimate framing, and observational documentary filmmaking techniques.
In his role as Producer, he contributed to the development of the film’s narrative structure, interview direction, production planning, and creative execution. This included helping design the documentary’s chapter flow, coordinating story beats, and crafting visual sequences that contrasted the evolution of dentistry across generations while maintaining a deeply personal and authentic perspective on Dr. Sam’s life.
As Cinematographer, Rich Bella emphasized visual storytelling rooted in character and atmosphere, capturing both the quiet discipline of Dr. Sam’s daily routines and the emotional weight of his lifelong dedication to service, craftsmanship, and community. His approach sought to highlight the themes of purpose, resilience, innovation, and legacy that define the film’s core message.
